The return of the Mustang Mach 1.

It was the year 1969, the bubblegum pop group ‘The Archies’ were at the top of the music charts with the song “Sugar, Sugar.” Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid kept the movie theaters busy with the year’s highest grossing film. The Concorde conducted its first supersonic test flight in France and, perhaps most importantly… Ford introduced a new Mustang, but not just any Mustang – this was the Mustang Mach 1!

In the late 60’s there was a war going on with the “Big 3” automakers for dominance in the muscle car ring. Each one was trying to one-up their competitors, and Ford, all too willing to up the game even further, threw the Mach 1 straight into the dog fight. Delivering performance and improved dynamics, the Mach 1 came with an upgraded suspension, better handling and a menacing shaker-style hood scoop with a matte black hood that shouted, “I mean business!” But the coolest option that made this car the one everyone wanted was the bone-shaking 428 Cobra Jet backed by a 4-speed manual transmission. This was no secretary’s Mustang; this was the real deal!

“Mach 1 has always been that bridge between base Mustangs and the Shelby models,” said Ted Ryan, heritage brand manager at Ford Archives. “From a style and handling perspective, the original Mach 1 managed to stand out as unique, even in the Mustang lineup – and as the name implies, it could really move.”

Now, 52 years later, Ford is bringing the iconic Mach 1 back to its current Mustang line up. Adding it to the stable with legendary names like Bullet, Shelby GT350, and the new Shelby GT500.

“Mach 1 has a special place in Mustang history, and it’s time for this special edition to claim the top spot in our 5.0-liter V8 performance lineup and reward our most hardcore Mustang enthusiasts who demand that next level of power, precision and collectability,” said Dave Pericak, director, Ford Icons. “Like the original, the all-new Mustang Mach 1 will be true to its heritage, delivering great looks and as the most track-capable 5.0-liter Mustang ever.”

The 2021 Mustang Mach 1 will continue its legacy with speed, style and performance that will harken back to the muscle car days while providing track capabilities that will put a smile on any track monkey’s face. The 2021 Mach 1 will be badass, and it will be all Ford Mustang!
